Pigs and the Pigpen: everything about Chapter 16's new animal

Sunflower Land is adding its first new animal in a long while: the Pig, which lives in its own building, the Pigpen. It sits behind a beta feature flag, but the code already carries the full tables: what it costs, what it produces at every level, what it eats and where it lands against the cow and the sheep. Here is all of it.

What the Pigpen costs

It is the third animal building, alongside the Hen House and the Barn. It asks for bumpkin level 30, Spring Island and 2 hours of construction. Its footprint is 3x3, smaller than the Barn's 4x4. And it needs Mud from the very first brick, not only to upgrade it.

Level 2 is deliberately out of reach (for now)

Mud has no producer yet: it arrives with the Cave, which has not shipped. The code says so outright — until the Cave exists, upgrading the Pigpen is impossible. You will be able to build it and fill it, but your pigs stay capped at level 5 until then.

The three free pigs are born at level 0

When you raise the building it arrives with three pigs inside, so you do not start with an empty pen. But mind the detail: those pigs come with 80 experience points and a pig's level 1 needs 150. So they are born at level 0, and an animal at level 0 produces nothing. You have to feed them before you see your first Rawhide.

The Pigpen caps how far they climb

Here is the progression hook, and it works like nothing else in the game: the building's level sets each pig's ceiling. The animal keeps banking experience above the cap and keeps producing (like any max-level animal), but it will not climb until you upgrade the Pigpen. That banked XP is not lost: the day you upgrade, your pigs jump straight to the level they had already earned.

PigpenPigsPig level cap
Level 1 3 5
Level 2 6 10
Level 3 9 15
Each building level adds 3 to capacity and 5 to the level ceiling.

And if you go over capacity — four pigs in a pen that holds three, say — the game deletes nothing: it puts the oldest one to sleep, drawn as a sleeping animal and impossible to feed. The rest carry on as normal.

What it produces, level by level

Pig levelRawhideTruffle
0
1 – 3 1
4 2
5 – 7 2 1
8 – 9 3 1
10 – 14 3 2
15 4 3
The full drop table from the code. Level 5 is the jump that matters: that is where Truffle appears.

A maxed pig yields 4 Rawhide and 3 Truffle per harvest, against 1 Rawhide and nothing at the start. That is an enormous gap, and it explains why the building's cap matters so much: with the Pigpen at level 1 you will never get past 2 Rawhide and 1 Truffle.

What it eats and which is its favourite

The pig eats 4 portions per meal — between the sheep's 3 and the cow's 5. Like the other animals it has a favourite food, worth noticeably more XP, and it changes as the pig levels. Omnifeed always counts as a favourite.

Pig levelFavourite foodXP per portion
0 – 2 Kernel Blend 60
3 – 5 Hay 60
6 – 9 NutriBarley 60
10 – 15 Mixed Grain 80
The favourite by level band, with the XP each portion gives. Outside its band, that same feed is worth between 10 and 30.

And there is a fine detail the code spells out: if the Pigpen has the pig capped, its favourite is the capped level's, not the one its banked XP would imply. Levels 5 and 6 have different favourites, so getting it wrong means paying for expensive feed and getting cheap XP.

How it compares with the other animals

AnimalPriceBumpkinPortionsXP to 15Yields at 15
Chicken 50 6 1 2,720 5 Egg · 3 Feather
Sheep 120 18 3 5,440 4 Wool · 4 Merino Wool
Pig 110 16 4 6,800 4 Rawhide · 3 Truffle
Cow 100 14 5 8,160 4 Milk · 4 Leather
The pig against the rest of the yard. Chicken, cow and sheep figures come from the live game; the pig's from the pull request.

The code says it outright: the pig sits between the cow and the sheep. And the numbers back it up across the board — price (110 between 100 and 120), bumpkin level (16 between 14 and 18), portions per meal (4 between 3 and 5) and total experience (6,800 between 5,440 and 8,160). The pig's XP ladder is, literally, the chicken's multiplied by 2.5.

What it still does not have

  • No shrine covers it. The Collie Shrine speeds up cow and sheep sleep, the Bantam Shrine covers chickens, and the pig fits neither. Today there is no way to shorten its rest.
  • There is no Golden Pig. Cows, sheep and chickens have their mutant version; the pig does not yet.
  • No time-limited feed discount reaches it, unlike the other animals.
  • Capacity (3/6/9) is fixed: it is not raised by the collectibles that do lift the Hen House and the Barn.
  • It can be sold and it does fill bounties, like the rest.

These are the real testnet sprites: the pig and the new Pigpen. For now a single pig sprite covers all four of its states and one building image serves every level, so they may still be polished before the final release.

The interesting part is the plumbing

Most of the change is not the pig, but generalizing an animal system that until now took for granted there were only two buildings. Two fine details surfaced along the way: the free pigs are handed over when you build, not in the initial farm, because doing it the other way round would have gifted three pigs to every existing farm on its first load; and a bug was fixed where a third animal type inherited the Collie Shrine's sleep boost that nobody had given it. Adding one animal is always more work than it looks.
